An interatrial septal aneurysm is noted with a saccular formation of the interatrial septum bulging into the left atrium. The aneurysm is protruding ~16 mm beyond the plane of the atrial septum. The diameter at the base of the aneurysm is ~ 27mm. There is no atrial septal defect or any obvious left to right shunt.

Atrial septal aneurysm is a congenital cardiac abnormality that is characterized by saccular formation of the interatrial septum. Redundant atrial septal tissue results in bulging of the septum into either or both atria during the cardiac cycle.

5 Dec 2020 The length of the interatrial septum, the diameter of IASO, the excursion and base of aneurysm, and the width of the related atrium were measured

An atrial septal aneurysm is a deformity that causes a protrusion of the septum, the thin tissue separating the upper chambers of the heart, notes the Annals of Pediatric Cardiology medical journal. A sac forms within the septum, causing it to bulge more than 15 millimeters from its normal position and into the left or the right chamber.

What is atrial septal aneurysm? Atrial septal aneurysm is a rare abnormality of the heart that is usually detected during routine cardiac check up, or evaluation of ischemic stroke. It may be an isolated issue or occur with other cardiac defects. Common symptoms reported by people with atrial septal aneurysm Imaging description Atrial septal aneurysms (ASA) appear as a thin-walled, round or lobulated outpouching located at the fossa ovalis. They are formed by redundant tissue of the fossa ovalis that protrudes ≥ 10–15 mm beyond the plane of the interatrial septum with a base ≥ 15 mm in width (Figure 18.1). Atrial septal aneurysm is a congenital cardiac abnormality that is characterized by saccular formation of the interatrial septum.

Interatrial septal aneurysm

2. An aneurysm of the interatrial septum occurs both congenital as well as acquired conditions. In diseases such as mitral atresia and tricuspid atresia blood is forced through the atrial septum and if the septum primum is restrictive then bulging of the septum occurs and over a long period this becomes an aneurysm. An atrial septal aneurysm is an abnormally enlarged, bulging and mobile atrial septum.

The atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) is a morphologic abnormality known to cause peripheral and pulmonary embolism. 28-52% patients with ASA have embolic events. However ASA -- with no other concomittant cardiac patology has rarely been reported as the indication for open heart surgery.
